About us…

I’m Ray Mills, an independent consultant specializing in writing for resilience. I help communities, nonprofits, and small businesses strengthen their ability to adapt, thrive, and plan for the future, in the face of a changing environment. My work centers on the belief that resilience isn’t just a plan on paper, it’s a collaborative process that begins with listening deeply to the people who live, work, and lead in a community.

My consulting practice consists of three main services area:

  • Grant Writing & Development

  • Vulnerability Assessments & Sustainability Writing

  • Strategic Communications

Whether I’m developing a competitive grant proposal or guiding a community through a climate-focused planning process, my goal is always the same: to help organizations and communities turn limited resources into meaningful, lasting impact.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maine and bring four years of experience in mission-driven organizations, both within higher education and environmental organizations. I have honed my skills in writing, graphic design, fundraising, sponsorship development, and resilience-focused assessment work. These experiences, along with my personal background, have shaped my understanding of how small and medium-sized organizations, especially in rural areas, face unique challenges when it comes to funding, capacity, and long-term planning.

My philosophy is simple: resilience only works when communities are actively engaged in shaping it. I specialize in writing with rural and underserved regions where access to resources is often limited, helping organizations navigate those constraints with clarity, creativity, and strategic direction. I believe that every community, no matter its size, deserves the tools and support needed to build a more sustainable and secure future.

When I’m not working with clients, you can find me surrounded by nature, whether that is canoeing, hiking, fishing, or foraging for wild foods and medicines.

If you’re looking for a partner to help you strengthen your community’s resilience, secure funding, or communicate your mission more effectively, I’d love to connect.
